Legionella Risk Assessment

Legionella bacteria are to be found where warm water is recirculated or becomes stagnant.

If bacteria multiply to large numbers and can be distributed in water droplets where it is possible for them to be inhaled, then there is a risk of legionnaires disease, a potentially fatal disease of the respiratory system, and may be found in devices such as evaporative cooling towers, open air conditioning units, and showers.

Companies who have such systems are obliged to carry out a risk assessment of their site and if a risk exists they must take steps to eliminate that risk or to treat for it.

Common treatment methods are by use of biocides, periodic cleansing and disinfection. Because the bacteria cannot live at high temperatures, scalding of hot water systems such as showers is often the most effective way of eliminating the risk, without the need for chemicals.

Andrew Vevers Environmental Consultants will carry out an independent risk assessment and report on the required treatment regime. The company will advise on what to expect from your chosen treatment contractor.
